Centre Plans Study to Help India’s Deep Tech Startups Scale Up
The proposed study will examine barriers preventing deep-tech ventures from moving beyond research and prototypes and identify measures to strengthen commercialisation and growth.
New Delhi, Aug 27: The Centre is planning a study to identify ways to strengthen India’s deep tech startup ecosystem and help emerging companies move from research and experimental prototypes towards commercial products and larger scale operations.
The proposed exercise comes as India seeks to expand its capabilities in advanced technologies and build a stronger domestic innovation base. The study is expected to examine the challenges faced by deep tech ventures during the transition from laboratory research to market ready solutions.
Deep-tech startups typically work on technologies requiring substantial research, specialised talent, advanced infrastructure and longer development cycles. Unlike conventional technology ventures, these companies often require significant capital before their products can generate commercial returns.
The government initiative is expected to look at the support required at different stages of development, including research, product validation, technology development and commercialisation.
The move could also help identify gaps in access to funding, testing facilities, skilled professionals and industry partnerships that can slow the growth of technology-intensive startups.
Strengthening this segment has become increasingly important as India seeks to develop capabilities in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, robotics, quantum technology and other advanced fields.
The proposed study could eventually help shape policies aimed at enabling promising Indian technologies to move more efficiently from research institutions and startup laboratories into the marketplace.
The government has increasingly focused on building an environment in which technology companies can develop intellectual property and scale products domestically, while also contributing to India’s broader innovation and manufacturing ambitions.
