FPIs Pull Out ₹7,443 Crore From Indian Equities in First Week of September

Foreign investors turned net sellers after two consecutive months of buying, with global market conditions weighing on sentiment toward Indian stocks.

NEW DELHI, Sept 6: Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) turned net sellers in Indian equities during the first week of September, withdrawing ₹7,443 crore from the domestic stock market amid growing caution over global economic conditions.

The latest outflow marks a reversal after foreign investors recorded net purchases for two consecutive months. The shift comes as changes in global financial conditions encourage investors to reassess their exposure to emerging markets.

A rebound in crude oil prices, higher US bond yields and a stronger US dollar have contributed to a decline in risk appetite, according to market observers.

The movement of foreign capital remains an important factor for Indian equities because large institutional flows can influence market liquidity and investor sentiment.

The September selling also comes against a backdrop of uncertainty in international markets, where investors are closely monitoring interest-rate expectations, currency movements and energy prices.

A stronger US dollar can make emerging market assets relatively less attractive to global investors, while elevated bond yields may encourage funds to move toward dollar denominated fixed-income investments.

For India, sustained foreign selling could add pressure to benchmark indices and the rupee, although domestic institutional participation and underlying economic growth could provide some support.

Analysts are expected to monitor FPI activity closely in the coming sessions to determine whether the latest withdrawals represent a temporary adjustment or the beginning of a more prolonged change in overseas investor sentiment.

The direction of global crude prices, US monetary policy expectations and currency movements is likely to remain crucial for foreign investment flows into Indian markets in the near term.
