MELBOURNE, Sept 11: The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in the National Football League’s first regular-season game in Australia, delivering a commanding performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Quarterback Brock Purdy led the 49ers’ offence with 205 passing yards and three touchdown passes as San Francisco controlled the contest from the opening stages.
The Rams struggled to generate momentum, with quarterback Matthew Stafford unable to find the end zone. Stafford, the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player, was eventually taken out of the game late in the contest.
San Francisco’s defence also played a major role in the victory, repeatedly disrupting Los Angeles and preventing the Rams from mounting a sustained comeback.
The game attracted 100,021 spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, making it the second-largest crowd for an international regular-season NFL game.
The 49ers’ preparation for the overseas fixture also appeared to pay dividends. The team arrived in Melbourne a week before the game to adjust to the local conditions, while the Rams arrived only a day before the contest.
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan further strengthened his record against Rams coach Sean McVay, improving to 12-7 in their head-to-head meetings.
The result gave the 49ers an emphatic start to their historic Australian appearance, while the Rams were left searching for answers after a disappointing offensive display.
