DUSU Polls: ABVP Clinches Three Key Posts as NSUI Faces Setback
Yash Dabas, Riya Chhawdi and Lakshya Raj Singh secure key positions, while Deepanshu Shokeen records a decisive victory in the vice-presidential contest.
New Delhi, Sep 20 : The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured three of the four central panel positions in the 2026 Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice president’s post by a substantial margin.
ABVP’s Yash Dabas emerged victorious in the presidential contest, polling 24,576 votes to defeat Congress backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) candidate Vijai Shankar Meena, who received 22,523 votes. Dabas won by 2,053 votes in a closely contested race.
Riya Chhawdi won the secretary’s position for ABVP with 21,650 votes, finishing ahead of NSUI’s Namrata Chaudhary, who secured 14,869 votes. Lakshya Raj Singh also represented ABVP successfully in the joint secretary contest, securing 16,641 votes.
The vice-presidential result was a major feature of the election. Shokeen, who contested as an independent after being associated with NSUI, received 30,615 votes. He finished well ahead of ABVP’s Ishu Maurya, who polled 16,910 votes, giving Shokeen a winning margin of 13,705 votes.
The outcome left NSUI without any of the four central panel positions. Its candidates remained competitive in some contests, including the presidential race, but could not convert their vote share into a victory.
The AISA-SFI alliance also contested the central panel. Its presidential candidate Ananya Raturi secured 5,377 votes, while secretary candidate Stanzin Deskyong received 8,734 votes. In the vice-presidential contest, AISA-SFI’s Akshat Shikhar polled 2,383 votes, fewer than the 4,359 votes recorded for NOTA.
The elections were held amid discussions around student safety, accommodation and campus infrastructure. Dabas said improving safety in college hostels and paying-guest accommodations would be among his priorities. Shokeen, meanwhile, said he would pursue issues concerning students affected by the Satya Niketan building collapse.
The 2026 DUSU election recorded a voter turnout of 40.46 per cent, with voting conducted across 52 polling centres. The results followed a closely watched campaign and counting process in which the lead shifted between candidates during several rounds.
