NEET PG 2026 Seat Matrix Lists 63,177 Postgraduate Medical Seats Across India

NMC releases the 2026-27 postgraduate medical seat matrix, with Karnataka recording the highest number of seats among states.

New Delhi, October 1 : The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the postgraduate medical seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic session, listing 63,177 NEET PG seats across medical colleges and institutions in India.

The seat details, released ahead of the counselling process, provide candidates with information on postgraduate medical education capacity across different states, institutions and specialities. The latest figures were reported on September 30 as the medical admission cycle moved towards the next stage.

The National Medical Commission’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board prepared the seat position for the new academic year. The matrix covers seats available across government, private and deemed institutions and is intended to provide an updated picture of postgraduate medical education capacity.

According to the released figures, government institutions account for 33,088 seats, while private medical colleges have 21,892 seats. Deemed universities and institutions account for another 8,197 seats. The distribution gives prospective candidates a clearer view of available opportunities before the counselling process begins.

The overall number represents an increase from the previous academic year. Reports indicate that the latest matrix contains 5,827 more postgraduate seats than the previous year’s figure.

The increase comes at a time when demand for postgraduate medical education remains high among MBBS graduates seeking admission to MD, MS and other specialised programmes.

Among the states, Karnataka has the largest number of postgraduate medical seats, with 8,323 positions listed in the matrix. Maharashtra follows with 6,992 seats, while Tamil Nadu has 6,306 and Uttar Pradesh has 6,082.

Andhra Pradesh is also among the states with a substantial postgraduate medical intake, with 4,142 seats listed. Other states with significant numbers include Telangana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Kerala.

The state-wise distribution is significant for candidates because postgraduate medical opportunities remain concentrated in a limited number of states and major medical education centres. The figures also provide an indication of the capacity available across different regions.

At the speciality level, MD General Medicine has the largest intake, with 6,143 seats listed in the current matrix. Anaesthesiology and General Surgery are among the other major postgraduate disciplines represented in the available seat pool.

The publication of the seat matrix is an important stage in the NEET PG admission cycle. Candidates can use the information to understand the number of available seats before making choices during counselling.

The matrix also gives applicants a basis for comparing institutions and specialities. However, the availability of a seat in the matrix does not by itself guarantee admission, as allocation will depend on counselling procedures, candidate eligibility, merit and applicable reservation and admission rules.

The postgraduate medical admission process involves several stages, beginning with the publication of available seats and followed by counselling, choice filling, seat allotment and reporting. Candidates are required to follow the schedules and instructions issued by the relevant authorities.

The seat figures also highlight the continuing expansion of postgraduate medical education capacity in India. An additional 5,827 seats compared with the previous year means that more postgraduate positions are available nationally, although competition for sought after specialities and institutions is expected to remain substantial.

For medical graduates, the distribution of seats across government, private and deemed institutions is particularly relevant when assessing available options. Government institutions account for more than half of the seats listed, while private and deemed institutions together make up a sizeable share of the national capacity.

The release comes as the 2026 admission cycle enters a crucial phase for doctors seeking postgraduate specialisation. Candidates will need to examine the official seat information carefully and keep track of counselling notifications before making their selections.

The matrix also reflects the geographical differences in India’s medical education infrastructure. Karnataka’s position at the top is followed by other large states with extensive networks of medical colleges. The numbers demonstrate how postgraduate training opportunities are distributed across the country’s healthcare education system.

The availability of seats in different disciplines is another factor that candidates will consider. While General Medicine has the highest intake, postgraduate medical education covers a wide range of clinical and non-clinical specialities.

The publication of the updated figures is therefore relevant not only to individual candidates but also to medical colleges and policymakers monitoring the country’s specialist training capacity.

For students preparing for the next stage of admission, the seat matrix provides a detailed reference point for counselling decisions. Candidates are expected to check the official information carefully because seat availability can be subject to updates during the counselling process.

The latest figures underline the scale of India’s postgraduate medical education system and the large number of doctors seeking advanced training each year. With 63,177 positions listed for 2026-27, the new matrix establishes the available national pool from which candidates will compete for postgraduate medical courses.

As counselling progresses, applicants will have to consider their preferred speciality, institution, location and eligibility requirements while filling their choices. The final allotment will depend on the applicable counselling rules and the availability of seats at each stage.

The release of the NMC matrix thus marks a significant step in the 2026-27 postgraduate medical admission process, giving NEET PG candidates updated information as they prepare for the next phase of their academic and professional careers.
