Jason Sanjay Makes Directorial Debut With ‘Sigma’ as Sundeep Kishan Leads Heist Drama

Vijay's son steps behind the camera for the first time with an action-adventure film that reached cinemas on October 2.

CHENNAI, Oct 2: Filmmaker Jason Sanjay has made his directorial debut with Sigma, an action-adventure heist drama starring Sundeep Kishan. The Tamil film reached cinemas on Friday, October 2, marking a significant professional milestone for Jason Sanjay, who is the son of actor turned politician Vijay.

The project has attracted attention not only because of its genre but also because it introduces a new filmmaker from one of Tamil cinema’s most prominent film families. Jason Sanjay has taken charge behind the camera while Sundeep Kishan leads the cast in a story built around a major heist.

Ahead of the theatrical release, the film received a U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification. Reports said the movie has been mounted on a large scale, with the makers presenting it as an action driven entertainer.

The film’s October 2 arrival places it among the major South Indian releases of the weekend. Its release also gives audiences an opportunity to see Jason Sanjay establish his own filmmaking identity rather than appearing in front of the camera.

Sundeep Kishan plays the central character in the film and carries the narrative through its heist-oriented storyline. The actor has worked across Telugu and Tamil cinema and has previously appeared in films spanning action, drama and comedy.

For Jason Sanjay, the transition into filmmaking represents a different route within the entertainment industry. Instead of following his father’s career as an actor, he has chosen direction as his first major creative role.

The film’s promotional campaign has placed considerable emphasis on its action and adventure elements. A heist story generally depends on planning, shifting alliances and unexpected developments, giving the makers room to combine large-scale sequences with a plot driven structure.

Reports published ahead of the release also focused on Jason Sanjay’s connection with Vijay. In an interview, he discussed what his father might think about the film and indicated that he expected Vijay to appreciate the project.

The association with Vijay has naturally generated public curiosity around the project, but Sigma is being presented as Jason Sanjay’s own directorial venture. The film therefore represents an important opportunity for the young filmmaker to establish himself through his work behind the camera.

The October 2 release comes during a busy period for Tamil and South Indian cinema. Several new productions are reaching theatres and streaming platforms around the same time, creating a broad entertainment line-up across languages.

The action-heist format also gives Sigma a distinct position within the weekend schedule. While several other new releases focus on family relationships, romance, psychological drama or comedy, Jason Sanjay’s film is centred on an elaborate criminal operation and the challenges surrounding it.

The film’s certification ahead of release allowed the makers to proceed with the planned October 2 theatrical opening. The U/A certificate means the film is available for a broad audience subject to the certification guidelines.

For Sundeep Kishan, the project adds another Tamil-language title to a career that has included work in multiple South Indian industries. His presence provides the film with an established lead performer while Jason Sanjay handles the creative direction.

The debut also arrives at a time when younger filmmakers are increasingly moving between traditional theatrical cinema and digital entertainment. While streaming platforms have created more opportunities for emerging directors, a theatrical release continues to offer a different scale and visibility.

Sigma therefore carries two parallel points of interest. The first is its action-adventure storyline and Sundeep Kishan’s leading role. The second is the arrival of Jason Sanjay as a director and the beginning of what could become a longer filmmaking career.

The film’s reception will provide the first major indication of how audiences respond to his approach to commercial cinema. Reviews, audience reactions and theatrical performance over the opening weekend will determine the immediate response to the project.

For now, the October 2 release marks the completion of Jason Sanjay’s transition from aspiring filmmaker to feature-film director. With Sundeep Kishan at the centre of the story, Sigma enters theatres as a new addition to the Tamil action-entertainment slate.
