India Aim to Extend T20I Lead Against New Zealand as Ishan Kishan Injury Forces Squad Change

After a record breaking chase in Christchurch, India prepare for the second T20I without the injured wicketkeeper-batter, with Kumar Kushagra added as cover.

CHRISTCHURCH, October 24: India will look to strengthen their position in the five match T20 International series against New Zealand as the teams meet for the second encounter at Hagley Oval on Saturday. The visitors entered the match with a 1-0 advantage after producing a remarkable four wicket victory in the opening game on October 22.

India’s successful pursuit of 226 runs in the first T20I demonstrated their batting depth and ability to handle pressure in a high-scoring contest. However, the team also faces an injury setback, with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan ruled out of the second match because of a low-grade strain in his right adductor muscle.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on October 23 that Kishan sustained the injury during the series opener. Kumar Kushagra has subsequently been added to the squad as cover, while the medical team continues to monitor Kishan’s recovery. No definite timeline for his return was announced. Source: Reuters.

Samson and Dhir lead India’s historic chase

The opening match offered a dramatic contest between two attacking sides. New Zealand posted 225 for four after being asked to bat first, putting considerable pressure on India’s bowling attack.

Glenn Phillips was the standout performer for the hosts, scoring an unbeaten 82 off 40 deliveries. His innings helped New Zealand maintain a strong scoring rate through the middle and final overs, with the home side capitalising on opportunities to build a formidable total.

India needed an equally aggressive response, and Sanju Samson provided the ideal start. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 67 from 33 balls, striking eight fours and four sixes to keep the required run rate under control.

Abhishek Sharma also contributed 29 from just 12 deliveries, helping India make a rapid start to the chase. The opening partnership put the visitors in a commanding position during the initial overs.

New Zealand, however, fought back through its spin attack. Michael Bracewell dismissed Abhishek, while captain Mitchell Santner removed Samson and Kishan in quick succession. India’s position became more precarious as the team lost wickets after its explosive beginning.

With the visitors needing to rebuild their innings, captain Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel played important supporting roles. Iyer made 42 from 28 balls, while Axar added 24 off 14 deliveries, ensuring India remained within reach of the target.

The contest eventually turned in Naman Dhir’s favour. The batter struck an unbeaten 42 from just 15 balls, combining powerful hitting with composure during the closing overs. His innings included five boundaries and two sixes.

India reached 230 for six in 19.4 overs, completing the chase with two deliveries remaining. The victory was India’s highest successful run chase in men’s T20 internationals at the time, giving the visitors a valuable early advantage in the series.

Samson’s contribution at the top and Dhir’s finishing performance illustrated two different ways of controlling a chase. While the opener ensured India stayed ahead of the required rate, Dhir delivered the decisive blows after New Zealand threatened to regain control.

Injury puts spotlight on India’s batting combination

Kishan’s absence creates an important selection decision for the Indian management. The left-handed batter offers flexibility in the top and middle order, and his wicketkeeping ability provides another option behind the stumps.

Kushagra’s inclusion gives the squad additional cover, although his availability does not automatically establish his place in the playing XI. The team management must decide whether to maintain its existing combination with a replacement or adjust the batting order to accommodate the changes.

India’s preparations will also focus on improving their bowling and fielding. Although the batting unit successfully overcame New Zealand’s total in the opening encounter, conceding 225 runs highlighted the challenge of controlling aggressive batters on a favourable surface.

Phillips’ innings demonstrated how quickly New Zealand can build momentum when its middle order settles. India will need better execution with the new ball, disciplined bowling during the middle overs and effective variations at the death to restrict the hosts.

The fielders will also be expected to make the most of their opportunities. In a format where small margins often determine the result, missed chances and poorly executed overs can have a considerable impact on the final score.

New Zealand seek a response on home soil

For New Zealand, the second match represents an opportunity to level the series and recover from a defeat despite posting an imposing total.

The hosts will take confidence from their batting performance in the first game, particularly Phillips’ ability to maintain pressure on India’s bowlers. However, the bowling unit will need to find ways to prevent another rapid start from the visitors.

The home side’s spinners made important breakthroughs during India’s chase, briefly shifting the momentum. Maintaining that pressure for longer will be crucial, particularly if the Indian top order again begins aggressively.

The five-match series provides both teams with opportunities to test combinations and assess players under different match conditions. With further encounters scheduled in Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton, the opening results are important but will not determine the final outcome.

For India, the immediate objective is to build on the confidence gained from the opening victory while adapting to Kishan’s absence. A second consecutive win would strengthen the visitors’ position and place additional pressure on New Zealand.

The match at Hagley Oval is therefore an important test of India’s ability to sustain momentum, manage an injury setback and deliver a more complete performance across batting, bowling and fielding.
