PM Modi Salutes ITBP Himveers for Their Courage and Sacrifice on Raising Day
The Prime Minister honours the border force’s sacrifices and commitment to national security as the ITBP marks its foundation anniversary on October 24.
NEW DELHI, Oct 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday saluted the courage, resilience and unwavering commitment of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel on the force’s Raising Day, acknowledging their vital role in protecting India’s frontiers and serving the nation in challenging conditions.
In a message posted on X, Modi praised the personnel, popularly known as Himveers, for their exceptional bravery and determination in the face of difficult operational challenges. He said their dedication and sacrifices continued to inspire the country.
The Prime Minister’s message highlighted the contribution of the personnel who remain deployed in remote border areas, often facing extreme weather and difficult terrain while carrying out their duties.
The ITBP was established on October 24, 1962, following the India-China war, to strengthen security along the Himalayan frontier. Since its formation, the force has developed specialised capabilities to operate in high-altitude regions and safeguard sensitive stretches of the India-China border.
As one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces, the ITBP performs its duties in some of the country’s most demanding geographical locations. Its personnel operate across rugged mountain ranges, snow-covered passes and isolated areas where temperatures can fall far below freezing.
Thin air, limited oxygen, unpredictable weather and difficult access make border patrols particularly demanding. Specialised training in mountaineering, survival techniques and high-altitude operations enables Himveers to maintain vigilance despite these challenges.
Beyond border protection, the force also contributes to disaster management and humanitarian operations, particularly in mountainous regions vulnerable to avalanches, landslides and other emergencies. Its trained teams undertake search and rescue missions and assist civilians during natural disasters.
The annual Raising Day serves as an occasion to recognise the dedication of ITBP personnel and remember those who have made sacrifices in the line of duty. It also acknowledges the families who support members of the force as they serve for extended periods away from home.
Modi’s message underscored the importance of the Himveers’ contribution to national security and their continued commitment to protecting the country’s territorial integrity. The force’s demanding responsibilities and specialised expertise remain central to maintaining security along India’s Himalayan borders.
