IndiaAI Fellowship Opens Applications for Students Pursuing Artificial Intelligence Research

The 2026–27 programme offers financial assistance of up to ₹1 lakh for undergraduate students and ₹2 lakh for postgraduate students, with applications closing on November 30.

NEW DELHI, Oct 23: The IndiaAI Mission has opened applications for its 2026–27 fellowship programme, offering financial support to students pursuing artificial intelligence related projects and research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The initiative aims to encourage students to undertake research oriented work in artificial intelligence (AI), a field increasingly influencing education, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, finance and other sectors. The programme is intended to support eligible learners who want to develop practical solutions and strengthen their technical understanding through academic projects.

According to details reported this week, eligible undergraduate students may receive financial assistance of up to ₹1 lakh, while postgraduate students may qualify for support of up to ₹2 lakh. Students interested in participating have been advised to review the eligibility conditions and application requirements on the official IndiaAI Fellowship portal.

The application deadline is November 30, 2026.

The fellowship is part of the government’s broader IndiaAI Mission, which seeks to expand the country’s artificial intelligence capabilities through research, skill development, innovation and access to technology. Supporting students at the higher education level is an important part of developing a workforce capable of contributing to the country’s growing digital economy.

Artificial intelligence has become a significant area of study for students in computer science, engineering, mathematics, data science and related disciplines. Its applications extend beyond software development to fields such as medical diagnosis, language processing, climate analysis, robotics and automated decision-making.

For students, research projects provide an opportunity to move beyond classroom concepts and investigate how these technologies can address practical problems. Financial support can help eligible applicants meet project-related expenses and devote greater attention to developing and testing their ideas.

The fellowship also reflects the growing importance of connecting academic learning with innovation. Universities and colleges can play a central role by providing faculty guidance, research facilities and opportunities for students to collaborate across disciplines.

An AI project may involve developing a model, analysing a dataset, creating a software prototype or testing a technology-based solution for a specific challenge. Such work can help students gain experience in problem-solving, experimentation, documentation and the evaluation of results.

The programme’s value will depend not only on the financial assistance available but also on the quality of research undertaken and the support students receive from their institutions. Mentorship and access to suitable computing resources can be particularly important for learners working on technically demanding projects.

Artificial intelligence research also requires careful attention to accuracy, privacy, fairness and the responsible use of data. Students need to understand that a technically successful model is not necessarily a reliable or socially beneficial solution. Research training can help them assess limitations, identify possible biases and consider the wider implications of their work.

For institutions, initiatives such as the IndiaAI Fellowship can encourage departments to strengthen research culture and provide students with more opportunities to explore emerging technologies. Interdisciplinary collaboration may also help learners combine computing skills with knowledge of social sciences, healthcare, environmental studies and other fields.

The expansion of AI education is taking place alongside broader discussions about employment and the skills required for future jobs. While automation may change the nature of some tasks, organisations will continue to need people who can understand technical systems, evaluate their outputs and apply them responsibly in real-world settings.

Students preparing for careers in this area can benefit from developing a strong foundation in mathematics, programming, statistics and data analysis. They can also improve their research prospects by learning how to frame a clear question, assess existing work, test possible solutions and communicate findings effectively.

However, access to advanced technology and research opportunities remains uneven across institutions. Financial assistance can help, but equitable participation also depends on clear eligibility criteria, accessible application procedures and adequate academic guidance.

Prospective applicants should therefore read the official fellowship guidelines carefully before submitting their applications. They should verify the eligible academic categories, required documents, project conditions and any additional selection criteria through the programme’s official portal rather than relying solely on summaries published elsewhere.

With the November 30 deadline approaching, students considering an application have a limited period to examine the requirements and prepare their submissions. Applicants should avoid waiting until the final day, particularly if they need to obtain institutional details or supporting documents.

The fellowship represents an opportunity for eligible students to pursue AI-related research while building skills relevant to higher education and technology careers. Its wider impact will be measured by the research outcomes it supports, the problems students are able to address and the extent to which new knowledge can be translated into useful applications.

As India continues to invest in digital capabilities, student-led research can contribute to a stronger innovation ecosystem. Programmes that combine financial assistance with meaningful research experience may help young people move from learning about emerging technologies to developing solutions of their own.
