Harmanpreet, Deepti Power India to 121-Run Win Over Zimbabwe in Second ODI

Harmanpreet Kaur’s century and Deepti Sharma’s unbeaten hundred set up a commanding victory in Vadodara, giving India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match women’s ODI series.

VADODARA, Oct 25: India produced a dominant all round performance to defeat Zimbabwe by 121 runs in the second women’s One Day International (ODI) on Sunday, sealing the three match series with a game to spare.

After opting to bat first, India posted an imposing 328 for six in their allotted 50 overs, powered by outstanding centuries from captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma. Zimbabwe struggled to keep pace with the required run rate during the chase and were eventually bowled out for 207 in 48.5 overs.

The result gave India a 2-0 lead in the series and underlined the team’s batting depth and bowling resources. The third and final ODI is scheduled to be played at the same venue on Wednesday.

Harmanpreet led from the front with a commanding 126 off 121 deliveries, while Deepti remained unbeaten on 106 from 87 balls. Their contributions ensured that India recovered from the early stages of the innings to establish a total that placed considerable pressure on the visitors.

Harmanpreet and Deepti Build a Match-Winning Total

India’s innings was shaped by the contrasting but complementary approaches of Harmanpreet and Deepti. The captain provided stability and authority, while Deepti accelerated effectively to maintain the scoring momentum.

Harmanpreet’s 126 was the highest individual score of the innings. Her ability to occupy the crease and build a substantial contribution gave India the platform required for a strong finish. Rather than allowing Zimbabwe to dictate the pace through regular bowling changes, the Indian captain ensured that the innings remained productive.

Deepti’s unbeaten 106 added further strength to the total. Scoring at a brisk pace, she ensured that India continued to accumulate runs through the latter part of the innings. Her innings of 87 deliveries proved particularly valuable in taking the score beyond 320.

The partnership between the two senior players was central to India’s performance. While Harmanpreet concentrated on building a major innings, Deepti’s scoring rate helped the team convert its position into a formidable total.

Zimbabwe’s Nomvelo Sibanda claimed two wickets, but the visitors were unable to prevent India from maintaining pressure throughout the innings. The home side finished at 328 for six, leaving Zimbabwe with a challenging target of 329.

The total required the visitors to sustain a high scoring rate over the full 50 overs while also preserving wickets. Against an Indian attack containing several effective bowling options, the task proved difficult.

Zimbabwe Fail to Maintain the Required Pace

Zimbabwe began the chase knowing that a strong start would be essential. However, the size of the target meant that the visitors could not afford prolonged periods of low scoring.

Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano top-scored for Zimbabwe with 46 runs from 57 balls. Her innings provided resistance, but she could not produce the sustained acceleration needed to bring the target within reach.

India’s bowlers continued to apply pressure as the innings progressed. Vaishnavi Sharma delivered a particularly effective performance, taking four wickets, while Deepti Sharma completed an impressive all-round display by claiming three.

The combination of Vaishnavi’s wicket-taking ability and Deepti’s contribution with the ball prevented Zimbabwe from establishing a decisive partnership. As wickets fell, the visitors found it increasingly difficult to keep up with the required rate.

Zimbabwe were eventually dismissed for 207 in 48.5 overs, falling 121 runs short of the target.

India’s bowling performance complemented the substantial work done by the batters. The attack did not allow Zimbabwe to build the partnerships necessary for a serious challenge, ensuring that the advantage created in the first innings translated into a convincing result.

Deepti’s All-Round Contribution Strengthens India

Deepti’s performance stood out because of her impact in both departments. Her unbeaten century helped India reach a commanding total, and her three wickets then played a significant role in restricting Zimbabwe.

Such contributions provide valuable flexibility in one-day cricket. A player who can deliver substantial runs and contribute with the ball gives the captain additional options when managing the innings and setting bowling plans.

Harmanpreet’s century was equally important, particularly because it allowed India to construct an innings around a dependable senior batter. Her leadership and scoring contribution helped establish the foundation for the eventual victory.

Vaishnavi’s four-wicket haul also highlighted the importance of India’s bowling depth. With Zimbabwe unable to build sustained partnerships, India maintained control of the contest during the second innings.

The performance demonstrated how a strong total, supported by disciplined bowling, can place an opposition under pressure for an extended period. Zimbabwe needed an exceptional chase, but India’s attack ensured that the target remained beyond their reach.

India Look to Complete a Clean Sweep

With the series already secured, India will have an opportunity to finish the contest with another victory when the teams meet in the final ODI on Wednesday.

The result also gives the Indian team a chance to assess its combinations and maintain momentum. Harmanpreet’s form, Deepti’s all-round contribution and Vaishnavi’s wicket-taking performance provide encouraging signs for the team.

For Zimbabwe, the final match will offer an opportunity to respond after two defeats. The visitors will need to improve their ability to contain India’s top-order batters and develop partnerships capable of sustaining a competitive chase.

The second ODI showed the gap that can emerge when one side converts individual performances into a coordinated team effort. India’s centuries established the advantage, and its bowlers completed the job without allowing Zimbabwe to mount a sustained challenge.

India’s 121-run victory was therefore more than a series clinching result. It was a display of batting power and bowling control that placed the team in a strong position heading into the final match.
