Kimi Antonelli Wins US Grand Prix, Moves Closer to Historic Formula One Title

The Mercedes driver claims his ninth victory of the season in Austin, finishing ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, but championship celebrations remain on hold until the Mexico City race.

AUSTIN, Oct 26: Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 Formula One Drivers’ Championship with a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, moving closer to becoming the youngest world champion in the sport’s history.

The 20 year old Italian controlled the race at the Circuit of The Americas, finishing 13.078 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen secured third place.

Antonelli started from pole position and maintained his advantage through a race shaped by strategic decisions, tyre management and battles for the remaining podium positions. The victory was his ninth Grand Prix win of the season and another major step towards his maiden world championship.

However, the championship remained undecided after Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and Mercedes teammate George Russell crossed the line in eighth. Their results kept the title contest mathematically alive ahead of next weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix.

Antonelli now leads Russell by 123 points, with Hamilton another point behind Russell. With four rounds remaining after the Austin race, the Italian is in a strong position to secure the championship.

Strong Start Gives Antonelli Early Control

Antonelli made an excellent start from pole position, holding the lead into the opening corner and preventing Verstappen from taking control of the race.

The Dutchman had started alongside the Mercedes driver but lost ground during the opening exchanges. Leclerc also challenged for position, setting up an early contest between Ferrari and Red Bull behind the race leader.

Antonelli quickly established a gap and began managing his pace. His ability to maintain control during the opening laps proved important as the race developed into a strategic contest involving different tyre approaches.

A brief Virtual Safety Car period was introduced to allow officials to recover debris from the circuit, but the interruption did little to affect Antonelli’s position at the front.

By the tenth lap, the Mercedes driver had built an advantage of almost three seconds. He continued to extend his lead while monitoring tyre performance and the timing of potential pit stops.

The opening phase demonstrated Antonelli’s composure under pressure. Although Verstappen remained a threat, the Italian avoided mistakes and maintained the pace required to protect his position.

Mercedes Strategy Delivers Another Victory

Tyre management became a crucial factor as the race progressed. Several drivers opted for two pit stops, while Mercedes committed to a one-stop strategy that required Antonelli to preserve his tyres over a longer stint.

The Italian responded by maintaining consistent lap times and avoiding unnecessary risks. His pace on the medium tyres allowed him to build a sufficient advantage before switching to the hard compound for the remainder of the race.

The strategy placed considerable importance on tyre conservation, particularly as the hard tyres had to last through the closing stages.

Antonelli handled the challenge effectively, keeping his rivals at a manageable distance while maintaining control of the race.

Even a late Virtual Safety Car period did not threaten his position. He crossed the finish line in one hour, 35 minutes and 16.650 seconds, securing victory by 13.078 seconds.

The result provided Mercedes with another important championship success and demonstrated the effectiveness of its strategic approach on a demanding circuit.

Antonelli’s victory also reinforced his consistency throughout the season. Winning nine races in a single campaign is a substantial achievement, particularly for a driver still in the early stages of his Formula One career.

Leclerc and Verstappen Complete the Podium

Leclerc secured second place for Ferrari after a competitive drive that saw him finish ahead of Verstappen.

The Monegasque driver delivered a strong performance in the closing stages, consolidating his position and securing a second consecutive runner-up finish.

Verstappen finished third after battling the Ferrari drivers and dealing with challenges during the race. The Red Bull driver remained competitive but could not match Antonelli’s pace over the full distance.

Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari, adding valuable points to his championship tally. His result was particularly important because it prevented Antonelli from securing the title in Austin.

Reigning champion Lando Norris completed the top five for McLaren. Isack Hadjar finished sixth, followed by Oscar Piastri in seventh and Russell in eighth.

Liam Lawson secured ninth place for Racing Bulls, while Pierre Gasly completed the top 10 for Alpine.

The results highlighted the different fortunes of the leading teams. Mercedes secured the race victory, Ferrari placed two drivers in the top four, and Red Bull obtained a podium finish through Verstappen.

For Antonelli, however, the main objective was achieved. He secured the maximum 25 points available for the race and increased his advantage over his nearest championship rivals.

Championship Decision Moves to Mexico City

Antonelli arrived in Austin with an outside chance of clinching the championship at the end of the race. A victory combined with sufficiently low finishes for Russell and Hamilton could have settled the contest with four races remaining.

Although Antonelli delivered the required victory, the results of his rivals prevented an immediate championship celebration.

Hamilton’s fourth-place finish and Russell’s eighth-place result kept both drivers within mathematical reach of the title.

Nevertheless, Antonelli’s 123-point advantage over Russell leaves him in a commanding position. He needs only two additional points at the Mexican Grand Prix to guarantee the championship, regardless of Russell’s result.

A ninth-place finish in Mexico City would provide those points, provided the race proceeds under the current championship conditions.

The next round therefore offers Antonelli an opportunity to complete a remarkable season. If he secures the title, he would become Formula One’s youngest-ever world champion, surpassing the existing age record held by Sebastian Vettel, who won his first championship at 23 in 2010.

The possibility has added significance because Antonelli is still establishing himself among the sport’s leading drivers. His performances this season have placed him at the centre of the championship battle and given Mercedes a major opportunity to secure the drivers’ crown.

Russell and Hamilton Keep the Contest Alive

Russell’s eighth-place finish was a disappointing outcome compared with Antonelli’s victory, but it ensured that the championship would not be decided in Austin.

The Mercedes teammate has remained Antonelli’s closest challenger for much of the season. However, the growing points gap means that Russell now faces an increasingly difficult task if he is to prevent his teammate from winning the title.

Hamilton also remains mathematically in contention, although his fourth-place result left him further behind the championship leader.

Both drivers will need strong performances in the remaining races, while Antonelli would have to experience a substantial change in fortunes for the title contest to remain open for long.

The Mexican Grand Prix is therefore expected to be a defining moment in the championship. Antonelli’s immediate target is modest in numerical terms, but the race carries considerable historical importance.

For Mercedes, the result in Austin also provides a boost as the team approaches the final stages of the season. The combination of strong qualifying pace, effective race strategy and Antonelli’s composure has helped the team maintain its advantage in the drivers’ standings.

A Landmark Season for the Young Italian

Antonelli’s latest victory adds to a season in which he has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to convert strong starting positions into race wins.

The Austin race required more than outright speed. He had to manage his tyres, respond to the changing positions of his rivals and maintain concentration over 56 laps.

His successful one-stop strategy was central to the result, but the execution depended on his ability to preserve tyre performance without surrendering too much pace.

The margin over Leclerc also showed that Antonelli remained in control despite the pressure of a championship-defining weekend.

With the next race scheduled for Mexico City, attention will now turn to whether the Italian can secure the remaining points needed to complete his title campaign.

A championship victory would mark a major milestone in his career and establish him as one of the youngest drivers ever to win Formula One’s most prestigious individual honour.

For now, Antonelli leaves Austin with another Grand Prix trophy and a substantial championship advantage. The title has not yet been decided, but his performance in the United States has brought him within touching distance of a historic achievement.
