Congress Asks BJP to Reflect on Varanasi, Nagpur Election Losses

Congress cites BJP setbacks in the Prime Minister's constituency and the RSS stronghold of Nagpur, while Kharge calls for fresh elections using ballot papers.

Mumbai, Oct 30 : The Congress on Friday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on the party’s performance in the recent MLC elections, asking him to introspect over the BJP’s defeats in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, and Nagpur, the headquarters of the RSS.

Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said the results in Varanasi, Nagpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj and Patna reflected public dissatisfaction with the policies of the Modi government.

Taking a dig at the Prime Minister, Ramesh said Modi should examine the reasons behind the BJP’s electoral setbacks rather than offering political sermons to the opposition.

“Before counting Congress’s seats, I wish he would also reflect on why BJP lost both seats in his own parliamentary constituency of Varanasi, and how Congress managed to defeat BJP in RSS’s stronghold of Nagpur,” Ramesh said.

Congress Maharashtra in-charge Sirivella Prasad highlighted the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s performance in the state, where the opposition alliance secured three of the five seats. He described the Congress candidate’s victory in Nagpur, considered a BJP stronghold, as a significant political message.

Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge challenged Modi to dissolve Parliament and call fresh elections, insisting that the polls should be conducted using ballot papers.

The exchange followed the Prime Minister’s sarcastic comments questioning the number of seats secured by the Congress in the MLC elections, triggering a fresh confrontation between the ruling BJP and the opposition party.
