Jaishankar Visits US to Attend G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
Jaishankar's visit includes discussions on energy security, global economic challenges and a separate Quad ministerial engagement ahead of upcoming international summits.
WASHINGTON, Oct 30: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta on Friday, where discussions will centre on strengthening energy security, improving supply chains and addressing common economic and geopolitical challenges.
Jaishankar reached Atlanta late Thursday ahead of the two day meeting, being chaired by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The deliberations will open with Rubio addressing key geopolitical developments, followed by discussions on energy security and economic growth.
The US Department of State said the Trump administration intends to refocus the G20 on its core economic priorities, including promoting growth, enhancing economic security and delivering tangible benefits for the American people.
It added that Washington would engage with partner countries on international crises affecting the global economy, particularly threats to freedom of navigation, energy and food security, and the stability of supply chains.
The department emphasised that economic prosperity and global security are closely interconnected. The ministerial discussions are also expected to lay the groundwork for US President Donald Trump’s upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit and its wider economic agenda.
Atlanta, known for its diplomatic engagement, connectivity and commercial significance, is hosting the discussions ahead of the leaders’ gathering scheduled for December 14-15 in Miami.
Apart from the G20 deliberations, foreign ministers of the Quad countries — India, the United States, Japan and Australia — are also expected to hold talks on the sidelines of the meeting.
The proposed engagement will mark the second Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting this year and comes ahead of a likely leaders’ summit hosted by Washington in the Philippines next month.
After concluding his engagements in Atlanta, Jaishankar is scheduled to travel to Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which will take place from November 1 to 4.
