Congress demands action against PM Modi for “Congress shields terrorism” remark

Congress claims Modi’s speech is a desperate attempt to save BJP’s sinking ship in Karnataka

07-05-2023 : In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark that “Congress shields terrorism for vote bank,” the Congress Party has written to the Election Commission (EC) asking for action against him. In order to poison the atmosphere before the impending Karnataka Assembly elections, the opposition party has charged Modi with making “malicious and false” accusations. Top BJP figures, such as Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, have also been charged by the Congress for “polarising the atmosphere in Karnataka.” The Indian Penal Code and electoral regulations were broken by these leaders, and the EC has been urged to take urgent action against them.

In their memorandum to the EC, Congress general secretaries Randeep Surjewala and K C Venugopal have alleged that Modi has crossed the “lakshman rekha” and tarnished every norm and decorum set by his predecessors. The Congress has given copies of Modi’s speech in Ballary where he allegedly said, “Congress has shielded terrorism for the vote bank.” The Congress leaders have accused Modi of trying to mislead voters by making “false and unverified allegations” and also accused the party that led India’s struggle for freedom of supporting terrorists and terrorism.

The Congress has alleged that over the last week, Modi and his party colleagues have made every attempt to “polarise” the election and committed multiple electoral offences under the Indian Penal Code as well as other laws. The party has already submitted “evidence” against Shah, BJP National President JP Nadda and Adityanath, but no action has been taken against them.

The Congress has called upon the EC to exercise its powers under Article 324 of the Constitution and treat this matter with the urgent attention it deserves and initiate action against Narendra Modi. The party has warned that if the EC fails to rise to the challenge of upholding the law in the face of these defiant, deliberate and brazen violations being committed by the PM and his colleagues, it risks tarnishing its legacy and abandoning its Constitutional duty by setting a precedent of helpless inaction that will go down in infamy. The Congress has called Modi’s speech a desperate attempt to falsely tarnish the sacrifices and legacy of an almost hundred-and-forty-year-old party with an unmatched record of public service and sacrifice, all for the sake of petty political gains in the ensuing Karnataka assembly elections.
