Omar Abdullah Criticizes Continuation of Central Rule in Jammu and Kashmir, Calls for Early Elections
19-06-2023 : The continuation of central rule in Jammu and Kashmir has drawn criticism from former chief minister and National Conference (NC) Vice President, Omar Abdullah. In a tweet, Omar taunted the situation, suggesting that democracy comes to an end where J&K begins.
Omar Abdullah emphasized the significance of democracy in the cultural fabric of J&K. He mentioned phrases like “Democracy is in our veins” and “India is the mother of democracy,” which are often repeated and praised by the international community. However, he juxtaposed these statements with the fact that J&K has been under the central rule for the past five years, implying that democracy seems to be absent in the region.
The last time elections for the state legislature were held was in 2014. This prolonged period without elected representation has led to growing political resentment in the region.
If this continues, this second longest stint of Presidents Rule will soon become the longest ever. The first one was for 5 yrs and 9 mnths between 1990-96 when situation was very volatile. Today GoI says J&K is normal, then what stops them from giving power back to ppl of J&K. https://t.co/9ZZgwLi79l

All major political parties in J&K have been advocating for early elections to restore democratic processes in the UT. The demand for holding assembly elections has gained momentum as political leaders and parties seek to address the concerns of the people and provide them with a voice through elected representatives.
The call for early elections stems from the belief that the democratic system plays a vital role in addressing the needs and aspirations of the people. Elected governments are seen as vehicles for decision-making, policy formulation, and development initiatives that reflect the will of the people.
The restoration of regular elections in J&K is not only important from a democratic standpoint but also crucial for the overall development and stability of the region. The elected representatives have a direct connection with the aspirations and concerns of the people and can work towards addressing their needs effectively.
