Devika’ River Rejuvenation Project, Modeled After ‘Namami Ganga,’ Set to Transform the Region: Dr. Jitendra Singh
06-08-2023 : On Sunday, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh proudly declared that the much-awaited River Rejuvenation Project “Devika,” the first of its kind in North India, is almost complete. Launched under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and built at a cost of over Rs 190 crore, the Devika River Rejuvenation Project draws inspiration from the successful ‘Namami Ganga’ initiative. The project holds immense religious significance as Devika is considered the sister of the sacred Ganga River.
During a thorough review of the Liquid Waste Management Project, which runs parallel to the Devika Rejuvenation Project, Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of preserving the sanctity of the holy river. To achieve this goal, the Liquid Waste Management Project is being implemented by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED), with a comprehensive network of pipes and manholes connecting all households along the Devika River.
Out of the allocated Rs 190 crore funds, the Centre and Union Territory share the financial responsibility in the ratio of 90:10, respectively, showcasing the collaborative approach towards this essential environmental endeavor. Dr. Singh also shared his vision for the future, revealing that a Solid Waste Management Project will soon complement the Liquid Waste Management efforts. The comprehensive approach aims to safeguard the sanctity of the Devika River from various angles.
During the meeting, Dr. Singh emphasized the vital role of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in the successful execution of major developmental projects. Being the representatives of the grassroots level of society, PRIs play a pivotal role in ensuring the projects’ success and aligning them with the needs of the local communities. As part of the interaction, representatives from PRIs brought several pertinent issues to the Minister’s attention. In response, Dr. Singh promptly directed the relevant departments to address and resolve these issues at the earliest, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring smooth and efficient project implementation.
The nearing completion of the ‘Devika’ River Rejuvenation Project marks a significant milestone in North India’s environmental conservation efforts. As the project nears its final stages, the entire nation eagerly anticipates the positive impact it will have on the sacred Devika River and the communities it serves.
