Afaq presides over newly constituted District Srinagar Committee meeting
Says Constitutional, Democratic Rights of people must be restored immediately
Srinagar, 19 Sep: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Srinagar District President and former MLA Peer Afaq Ahmad Saturday said that the continued delay by BJP government in granting full powers to the democratically elected government of Jammu and Kashmir is reinforcing the perception that the BJP has not reconciled itself to the National Conference’s electoral victory.
He made these comments while presiding over a meeting of newly constituted members of district Srinagar.
He said the elected government must be vested with the powers necessary to serve the people without hindrance and deliver effective relief and assistance. Peer Afaq Ahmad urged the Central Government to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir without further delay and provide the elected government a genuine opportunity to serve the people in accordance with its mandate. He said deliberately creating obstacles in the functioning of an elected government is contrary to the principles and requirements of democratic governance.
He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have given the National Conference a five-year mandate to govern and that this popular mandate must be respected. Along with restoration of statehood, he called for concrete measures to restore the constitutional and democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He cited the Smart City project as a prominent example, saying that despite substantial expenditure, the project had not delivered the expected benefits to the people. He said frequent traffic congestion across Srinagar, waterlogging of roads and lanes even after moderate rainfall, and deficiencies in the drainage system reflected shortcomings in planning and execution.
He expressed confidence that the government would address past shortcomings, undertake necessary reforms and provide better facilities and services to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
