Six Indian Photographers Shine on Global Stage, Winning Awards in NHM’s Wildlife Photography Competition
13-10-2023 : Six Indian photographers have achieved international recognition by winning awards in the prestigious wildlife photography competition organized by the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London. This competition is not only a showcase of extraordinary talent but also a platform for celebrating the remarkable work of photographers from around the world.
The Wildlife Photographer of the Year award in the ‘Behaviour: Invertebrates’ category was claimed by Niranj Rajasekaran Murali, whose captivating photograph portrayed the Anamalai Tiger Reserve forest, illuminated by the mesmerizing flashes of fireflies amidst a fading twilight. To capture this enchanting scene, Murali creatively combined fifty 19-second exposures during a 16-minute period in the Tamil Nadu reserve.
In a separate category, a young photographer, Vihaan Talya Vikas, secured the award for ’10 Years and Under’ with his image capturing an ornamental tree trunk spider found near Karnataka’s Nallur Heritage Tamarind Grove.
Nejib Ahmed’s gripping shot depicted a distressed tiger alongside concerned villagers on the outskirts of Assam’s Orang National Park. Vishnu Gopal’s striking portrayal featured a lowland tapir in the Brazilian forest, while Vinod Venugopal’s mesmerizing image highlighted the Neoscona spider. Additionally, Raj Mohan’s aerial perspective captured the Pallikaranai marshland, a Ramsar site, engulfed in flames from burning garbage.
This NHM-led competition provides an important platform for acknowledging and celebrating the exceptional work of talented photographers from around the world. It not only showcases their skills and dedication but also highlights the stunning beauty and diversity of the natural world. These photographers have not only earned well-deserved recognition but have also contributed to the global appreciation of wildlife and conservation through their artistry.
