Winter’s Grip: Srinagar-Leh Highway Shut as Heavy Snowfall Blankets Kashmir, Other Key Routes Sealed Off

Isolated by Snow: Srinagar-Leh Highway Shutdown Adds to Kashmir's Roadblock Woes Amidst Regional Snowfall

Srinagar, 19-02-2024 : Heavy snowfall over the past 24 hours has led to the closure of several key highways emanating from Kashmir in Jammu and Kashmir, with the exception of the Srinagar-Jammu highway, which remains operational. Traffic authorities have confirmed the smooth movement of vehicles along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. However, other vital routes such as the Srinagar-Leh highway, Mughal Road, Bandipora-Gurez road, Sinthan-Kishtwar road, and access roads to Keran and Karnah border towns have been closed due to adverse weather conditions.

While lower altitudes in the Valley experienced rainfall, the higher mountainous regions including Zojila Pass, Baltal, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Doodhpathri, and Gurez witnessed substantial snowfall during this period. Reports from the renowned Gulmarg ski resort indicate ongoing heavy snowfall during the morning hours, further contributing to the wintry landscape.

The Meteorological Department has extended its forecast for rain and snow until February 21, beyond which an improvement in weather conditions is anticipated. This temporary closure and adverse weather conditions underscore the seasonal challenges faced by the region’s transportation networks and the importance of preparedness for inclement weather events.
