Aadhaar Authentication Upgrade: J&K to Replace L0 Devices with Advanced L1 Scanners Across Departments

UIDAI-Backed Directive: J&K Initiates Statewide Upgrade of Aadhaar Biometric Systems for Enhanced Security

JAMMU, Sept 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has initiated a directive to upgrade the existing fingerprint devices used for Aadhaar authentication, transitioning from Level 0 (L0) Registered Devices (RD) to more advanced Level 1 (L1) devices. As per a circular issued by the General Administration Department, all Administrative Secretaries, Deputy Commissioners, Heads of Departments, and Managing Directors of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), Corporations, and Boards have been instructed to replace the L0 fingerprint devices with L1 RD devices to enhance the Aadhaar authentication ecosystem.

The move follows recommendations from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which has advised upgrading biometric systems across the country. The shift from L0 to L1 fingerprint scanners is expected to bring significant improvements in the accuracy, security, and efficiency of the authentication process. The L1 devices offer advanced features that make them more suitable for a wide range of applications where enhanced security is paramount.

To ensure a smooth transition and avoid disruptions, the government has mandated a phased approach to replacing the L0 devices, allowing organizations time to implement the changes without affecting ongoing operations. This upgrade is part of broader efforts to improve the reliability and security of Aadhaar-based authentication systems.
