AI Safety Debate Intensifies as Tech Leaders Back Slower Development
Calls for greater oversight are growing as leading AI executives warn that rapid advances could create serious safety and security risks.
NEW DELHI, Sep 14: The debate over the pace of artificial intelligence development intensified this week after several prominent technology leaders backed calls for stronger safeguards and more measured progress in frontier AI.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has proposed a framework aimed at slowing the development of increasingly powerful AI systems and improving independent safety assessments. The proposal has received support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis.
The discussion comes amid growing concerns that highly capable AI agents could create new cybersecurity, economic and social risks if their development outpaces safety measures.
Altman has also said OpenAI will not pursue a public listing in 2026, while describing the potential risks associated with advanced AI as a serious concern.
The latest developments have renewed calls for cooperation among technology companies, governments and independent researchers to establish common safety standards.
