AI Traffic Cameras Drive Record High Challans in Gurugram, 2025

ANPR surveillance captures 1.18 million violations, up 40% from last year

Gurugram, Dec 12: Gurugram witnessed a record surge in traffic challans in 2025, with violations captured by CCTV cameras rising from around 847,000 in 2024 to 1.18 million, marking a year on year increase of nearly 40%, officials said on Thursday.

The spike is attributed to 308 AI-powered Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at 28 strategic locations across the city. These cameras can detect up to 14 types of violations, including overspeeding, hasty lane changes, driving without helmets, and seat belt violations.

The Delhi-Jaipur-Gurugram (NH-48) and Dwarka expressways, which saw the installation of 15 ANPR cameras on July 7, recorded the highest number of offences. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr. Rajesh Mohan, these cameras alone registered 93,963 violations until December 10, including 31,610 cases of overspeeding and 28,267 for lane discipline breaches.

Connected to the city’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), the cameras enable real-time monitoring and automated alert generation. They can track vehicles with hot listed, suspicious, or stolen plates, alerting authorities instantly for verification and e-challan issuance.

Other offences detected between July and November included driving without seatbelts (15,369), no-entry violations (8,472), riding without helmets (3,802), and triple riding on two-wheelers (694).

Looking ahead, under the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority’s Phase-II CCTV expansion, 432 additional ANPR cameras will be installed at 28 locations by December 2026, further strengthening automated traffic surveillance in the city.
