Anti-Corruption Bureau Apprehends Kathua Revenue Official for Accepting Bribe in Exchange for Land Documents

Kathua, 05-04-2024: A revenue official in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district found himself in legal trouble when the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) apprehended him for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000. The bribe was solicited in exchange for expediting the issuance of Virsati Intqal mutations (land documents) and a legal heir certificate.

The incident came to light following a complaint lodged with the ACB, which detailed how Gulshan Singh, the patwari of Halqa Machhadi, was purportedly demanding Rs 5,000 for processing the necessary paperwork. Initially, the complainant had provided an advance payment of Rs 2,000, with the remaining Rs 3,000 requested prior to the issuance of the documents.

The complainant had followed the proper procedure by submitting an application through the revenue department’s online portal before meeting with the patwari. Upon receiving the complaint, the ACB swiftly initiated an investigation, registering a case and assembling a dedicated team to handle the matter.

In the course of the investigation, the team acted promptly and apprehended the patwari red-handed while he was in the process of accepting the bribe. Consequently, the revenue official was arrested on the spot.

Following the arrest, authorities conducted searches at the accused’s residence in Kathua as part of the ongoing investigation. The ACB is continuing its efforts to gather more evidence and uncover any additional wrongdoing related to the case.
