Ashok Leyland Inaugurates Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Plant in Lucknow

Hinduja Group flagship opens first UP facility; plant to focus on electric buses, sustainability and employment

Lucknow, Jan 09 — In a major boost to industrial development and green mobility in Uttar Pradesh, Hinduja Group flagship Ashok Leyland on Friday inaugurated its electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Lucknow, marking the company’s first production facility in the state.

Speaking at the inauguration, Ashok Leyland Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja said the plant was completed in record time due to strong administrative support and efficient governance under the Yogi Adityanath-led government. He described Uttar Pradesh as an emerging hub for industrial investment, citing modern infrastructure, robust connectivity, improved law and order, and accountable administration.

“This new plant marks the beginning of an important chapter for Ashok Leyland in Uttar Pradesh,” Hinduja said, adding that the facility would contribute significantly to employment generation, economic growth, and the advancement of sustainable mobility while supporting the company’s Net Zero emission goals.

Hinduja expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his support, stating that clear policies and decisive leadership have positioned Uttar Pradesh as a state known for Fearless Business, Ease of Doing Business, and Trust in Doing Business.

Highlighting the broader policy ecosystem, he also praised Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for fostering a stable investment environment and Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy for initiatives promoting clean energy-based transportation, noting that India continues to set new benchmarks in the electric vehicle sector.

Located at Sarojini Nagar Industrial Area near Lucknow Airport, the 70-acre facility is Ashok Leyland’s most advanced and sustainable manufacturing plant globally. Designed with future-ready technology and digital manufacturing processes, the plant has an annual production capacity of up to 5,000 electric vehicles, with a primary focus on electric buses.

Ashok Leyland MD & CEO Shenu Agarwal said Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to environmental responsibility made it a natural partner in the company’s green mobility journey. “Aligned with our ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2048, this state of the art facility reflects our focus on innovation, quality, and sustainable transportation,” he said.

The green facility incorporates rooftop solar power, energy efficient LED lighting, battery-operated in plant logistics, positive water balance initiatives, and a zero-discharge system, reinforcing Ashok Leyland’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

Hinduja also underlined the company’s social initiatives, including its Road to School programme, which provides nutrition and education support to over 25,000 government school students across Uttar Pradesh.

Established in 1948, Ashok Leyland today operates in 15 countries, representing India’s manufacturing strength and technological capabilities on the global stage.
