Australia Hand Debuts to Two Newcomers for Ashes Opener, Smith Confirms Playing XI
Australia hand Jake Weatherald and Brendan Doggett maiden caps for high stakes Ashes opener in Perth
Australia, Nov 20 : Australia have confirmed their playing XI for the opening Ashes Test in Perth, with stand-in captain Steve Smith announcing two debutants for the crucial ICC World Test Championship encounter against England.
As reported by the ICC, Australia will introduce fresh talent at both ends of the lineup, handing maiden Test caps to opener Jake Weatherald and fast bowler Brendan Doggett a selection move predicted earlier this week by Ricky Ponting on The ICC Review.
The inclusion of the two newcomers means all rounder Beau Webster misses out despite a series of impressive recent performances. Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne returns to his preferred No. 3 slot after being left out of the previous Test matches, and Cameron Green retains his spot in the top six.
This marks the first time since 2019 that Australia have fielded two debutants in a single Test, and the first occurrence in an Ashes clash since 2011.
