Autumn Assembly Session to Begin October 13, Cabinet Recommends

Cabinet sets October 13 as start date for autumn Assembly session amid focus on statehood and reservation debates.

Srinagar, Sep 23: The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet on Wednesday recommended to the Lieutenant Governor to summon the Assembly on October 13 for the upcoming autumn session. The cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and attended by all ministers, decided that the session is likely to be brief, spanning seven days from October 13 to 20.

According to the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, no more than six months should elapse between the last sitting of one Assembly session and the first sitting of the next. Since the last sitting was held on April 29, the autumn session must be convened by October 28.

Key issues expected to dominate the House include the restoration of statehood and reservation matters. In the previous session, three resolutions on statehood lapsed following disruptions caused by the National Conference. Reservation concerns also remained a point of contention, with PC President and Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone criticizing the government over the matter.
