Avalanche alert issued for five J&K districts heavy snow forecast in higher reaches

Low danger alert in force above 2,800 metres in Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch and Ramban IMD forecasts mainly dry weather ahead with chances of light snowfall at isolated places.

Srinagar, Dec 24: Authorities on Wednesday issued a low-danger avalanche warning for five districts of Jammu and Kashmir amid concerns over unstable snow conditions in high-altitude areas following recent snowfall.

The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) said the alert is effective for areas above 2,800 metres in Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch and Ramban districts. Residents, trekkers and travellers have been advised to exercise caution and avoid movement on steep slopes over the next 24 hours.

The warning follows moderate to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches earlier this week, which has increased the risk of snow slides in vulnerable zones. While the overall danger level remains low, authorities said accumulated snow could become unstable due to temperature fluctuations.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), most parts of Jammu and Kashmir are likely to witness mainly dry weather over the next three to four days. However, a weak Western Disturbance is expected to approach the region towards the weekend, which may bring light snowfall at isolated higher locations.

Weather conditions across the Valley continue to remain cold. Gulmarg is experiencing sub-zero temperatures, with night temperatures dropping to around –8°C, while daytime temperatures are struggling to rise above freezing. Srinagar and adjoining plains are witnessing foggy mornings, cold days and freezing nights, with maximum temperatures hovering around 10–12°C and minimums dipping below –2°C.

Authorities have urged people living in avalanche-prone areas, particularly at higher elevations, to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel and follow official advisories to ensure safety during the ongoing winter season.
