Baramulla, Mar 2: In a groundbreaking development for digital policing in Jammu and Kashmir, the Police Station Pattan in Baramulla district has registered its first-ever electronic First Information Report (e-FIR) based on a complaint received via WhatsApp.
According to Baramulla Police, the complaint was lodged on February 28 by a government employee from Bemina, Srinagar (identity withheld) working in the Horticulture Department. The accused, Shakeel-Ur-Rehman, is also employed in the same department.
The complainant has accused Shakeel-Ur-Rehman of sexual harassment, attempted rape, and criminal intimidation. After conducting a preliminary review of the complaint, the police took immediate cognizance of the matter and formally registered an e-FIR (Case No. 30/2025) under relevant legal provisions at Police Station Pattan.
The registration of the e-FIR through WhatsApp marks a significant step in the adoption of digital solutions for law enforcement, ensuring faster complaint registration, increased accessibility, and improved responsiveness. This initiative aligns with modern policing reforms aimed at enhancing victim support mechanisms and expediting legal procedures.
Authorities have assured that the case is being thoroughly investigated, with efforts underway to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry. The introduction of electronic complaint mechanisms is expected to empower citizens, particularly victims of gender-based crimes, by providing a swift and efficient platform to seek justice.
