BJP Targets Congress-DMK Split Ahead of Tamil Nadu Political Realignment

Prime Minister Modi accuses Congress of abandoning allies for political survival.

New Delhi, May 11 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a fresh political attack on the Congress party over its evolving alliance equations in Tamil Nadu, accusing it of betraying long-time ally DMK for political convenience.

During his Bengaluru speech, Modi claimed Congress had benefited from the support of the DMK for years but chose to abandon the alliance when new political opportunities emerged. He alleged that the party lacked ideological consistency and relied heavily on opportunistic partnerships.

The remarks came amid growing speculation regarding new alliance formations involving regional parties in Tamil Nadu. Political developments in the state have attracted national attention because Tamil Nadu remains one of the few large states where the BJP has struggled to establish a dominant presence.

Modi accused Congress of “backstabbing” allies and said the party’s political survival depended on riding on the strength of regional parties. BJP leaders argued that Congress had repeatedly weakened its partners for electoral gain.

The BJP is increasingly attempting to expand its influence in Tamil Nadu by positioning itself as an alternative to the Dravidian political establishment. The party hopes that changing alliance equations and emerging regional players could create new political openings.

Congress leaders rejected Modi’s accusations and said alliance decisions were based on democratic consultations and electoral realities. Opposition parties accused the BJP of attempting to interfere in regional political dynamics.

Political analysts believe the BJP’s aggressive focus on Tamil Nadu indicates the party’s long-term strategy to increase its parliamentary presence in the South. Even modest gains in Tamil Nadu could significantly strengthen the BJP’s national position.

The political debate also reflects growing uncertainty regarding future opposition alliances at the national level. Regional parties are reassessing strategies after recent electoral developments in several states.

Observers believe Tamil Nadu’s political landscape may witness major realignments over the next two years, especially if national parties intensify their efforts to build new coalitions and social alliances.
