20-02-2023 : The new Chief Executive Officer of Niti Aayog is former IAS officer BVR Subrahmanyam, who has been appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. His appointment is for a period of two years from the date he assumes the charge of the post. Subrahmanyam, a 1987 batch IAS officer of Chhattisgarh cadre, retired as commerce secretary in September 2022. He played a significant role in strategizing India’s record $422 billion merchandise exports during his tenure at the department of commerce, as the economy tried to recover from the post-Covid slump last year. He also oversaw at least six free trade agreement negotiations, and India signed trade deals with the United Arab Emirates and Australia during his tenure.
Subrahmanyam is considered an internal security expert and has previously served as the chief secretary of Jammu and Kashmir. Niti Aayog is evolving into a state-of-the-art resource center with the necessary knowledge and skills to act with speed, promote research and innovation, provide strategic policy vision for the government, and tackle unforeseen issues. The government created Niti Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) to replace the Planning Commission, and a cabinet resolution provided details of the new institution. Parameswaran Iyer, the previous CEO of Niti Aayog, has been named the Executive Director of the World Bank in Washington DC.
