Central Govt awards 322 projects for road construction under Bharatmala Pariyojana

2,921 km of roads have been constructed until august 2020

New Delhi:  The Central government awarded 322 projects for the construction of 12,413 km of roads under the Bharatmala Pariyojana,. A statement issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that the projects were awarded until August. Under this project, 2,921 km of roads have been constructed till August 2020.

The ministry has taken up a detailed review of the National Highways network and has given a total investment approval for the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase I Scheme for development of around 34,800 km. This includes 10,000 km residential NHDP stretches. The estimated cost of the same was Rs. 5,35,000 crores.

An umbrella programme for the highway sectors, Bharatmala Pariyojana focuses on optimizing the efficiency of freight and passenger movement across the country. This is done by bridging critical infrastructure gaps through effective interventions, such as the development of economic corridors, inter-corridors and feeder routes, national corridor efficiency improvement, border, and international connectivity roads, coastal and port connectivity roads, and Green-field expressways.
