Centre Pushes States to Strengthen School Education Through PM SHRI Initiative

NEW DELHI, Sept 10: The Centre is continuing efforts to strengthen government schools through the PM SHRI initiative, with emphasis on improving infrastructure, teaching practices and technology enabled learning.

The initiative aims to develop selected schools as model institutions that demonstrate the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These institutions are expected to provide an environment that supports holistic development, experiential learning and skill based education.

The programme places emphasis on modern classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sports facilities and digital resources. Schools are also encouraged to adopt teaching methods that move beyond traditional classroom learning and give students greater opportunities for practical and experiential education.

Officials have highlighted the importance of improving foundational learning and ensuring that students develop essential skills at an early stage of their education.

The initiative also seeks to promote vocational exposure and strengthen the connection between classroom education and real-world skills. Schools selected under the programme are expected to serve as examples that can encourage wider improvements across the education system.

The Centre has been working with state and Union Territory governments to implement the programme and improve facilities in government-run schools.

The focus on technology and infrastructure comes as schools increasingly incorporate digital resources into teaching and learning. Better access to such facilities is expected to help students adapt to changing academic and employment requirements.

The programme is part of the broader implementation of NEP 2020, which seeks to make school education more holistic, flexible and focused on students’ overall development.
