China Expands Military Presence Near Taiwan After Fresh Political Tensions
Taiwan strengthens coastal surveillance
China, May 12 : China expanded military drills near Taiwan following renewed political tensions between Beijing and Taipei, increasing concerns about stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Chinese naval vessels and aircraft were reported operating around key maritime zones surrounding Taiwan, prompting Taipei to activate monitoring systems and increase coastal defence readiness.
The exercises came after statements from Taiwanese political leaders reaffirming the island’s democratic governance and international engagement policies. Beijing responded by describing the activities as necessary measures to protect national sovereignty.
The United States and several regional allies closely monitored the developments, with defence officials stressing the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and regional stability.
Security analysts warned that rising military activity around Taiwan continues to increase the risk of accidental confrontation involving major global powers.
The Taiwan Strait remains one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints due to its economic importance and role in global semiconductor manufacturing.
