Crime Branch Charges SKIMS Assistant Professor Over Alleged Fake Citizenship

Crime Branch’s Economic Offences Wing alleges the accused concealed her British nationality to obtain a government teaching position chargesheet filed before Srinagar court.

Srinagar, Feb 5: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch, Jammu and Kashmir, has filed a chargesheet against Afshan Shabir, a resident of Zadibal, accusing her of fraudulently obtaining a government job by allegedly hiding her foreign citizenship.

The chargesheet, linked to FIR No. 76/2022 under Sections 199 and 420 of the Ranbir Penal Code, was submitted before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Srinagar. Investigators claim that Shabir, appointed as an Assistant Professor at SKIMS Soura in 2019, was ineligible for the post as she held British citizenship along with an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.

According to officials, she had applied for the position through Advertisement Notice No. 04 of 2015 as an in-service candidate and furnished documents declaring herself an Indian citizen and permanent resident of Jammu and Kashmir. These declarations reportedly formed the basis of her selection.

During the probe, authorities examined her service records, application materials, and selection documents. The investigation allegedly revealed that she had obtained UK citizenship prior to entering government service and did not disclose this information. Officials further stated that she acknowledged possessing a British passport and OCI status.

The Crime Branch maintains that the alleged misrepresentation enabled her to secure a public post unlawfully, resulting in personal gain and financial loss to the government. Her employment was terminated through Government Order No. 23-SKIMS of 2022 dated August 20, 2022.
