“Dance of the Eagles” Named Top Photo in National Geographic’s Pictures of the Year Contest

19-02-2023 : National Geographic has announced the grand-prize winner of its Pictures of the Year photo contest, which received almost 5,000 entries from aspiring photographers across the US. The contest was tied to the brand’s annual Pictures of the Year list, which features 118 of National Geographic’s top images of the year selected from over 2 million entries, and was broken into four categories: Nature, People, Places, and Animals.

After careful consideration by a team of seasoned Nat Geo photo editors, Karthik Subramaniam’s photo titled “Dance of the Eagles” was selected as the grand-prize winner. Subramaniam, a software engineer-turned-hobbyist photographer, captured the image of bald eagles competing for a prime spot on a tree in the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Alaska.

Subramaniam’s winning photo will be featured in the May issue of National Geographic magazine alongside the work of leading photographers. He will also receive a six-month digital subscription to the magazine.

Nine additional photos were selected as honorable mention winners and will be showcased on National Geographic’s Your Shot Instagram page, which has over 6.5 million followers. The honorable mention winners will also receive a six-month digital subscription to the magazine. The contest provides a great opportunity for emerging photographers to showcase their talents and gain recognition in the industry.
