DDCs and BDCs interact with Dr. Raghavan RWT expert at Udhampur
UDHAMPUR, APRIL 20: To achieve the desired results with regard to water conservation and adopt best practices in the District and to deliver the key objective of the campaign launched by the Prime Minister of India under the theme “Catch the Rain” Where it falls When it falls, District Administration Udhampur organized a workshop at district headquarter wherein Dr. Sekhar Raghavan, Director Akash Ganga Trust, Rain Center Chennai interacted through virtual mode with stakeholder departments and DDCs and BDCs present at Conference Hall DC Office Complex Udhampur.
DDC Vice-Chairperson, Udhampur Juhi Manhas, Deputy Commissioner, Indu Kanwal Chib, BDCs, President MC, Dr. Jogeshwar Gupta, President MC Chenani District Development Council members, BDCs chairperson Additional District Development Commissioner, Ashok Kumar, Chief Planning Officer, Rajeev Bhushan, ACR, Viqar Giri, ACD, Mushtaq Chowdhary, PRIs and Seniors District officers of the district participated in the Workshop.
Dr. Raghavan gave a detailed overview of water conservation and rainwater harvesting. He apprised that RWH is not an option or an alternative, but the only way to sustain surface and groundwater sources and is relevant in both rural and urban areas. He briefed during the workshop that there are two important aspects of Rainwater harvesting, the collection of rainwater for immediate use and the natural or artificial recharge into the soil for sustaining and improving groundwater sources. RWH is essentially the collection of rainwater in surface water bodies, such as ponds, lakes, and irrigation tanks. During the workshop, Dr. Raghavan also shared his life experiences working on rainwater harvesting.
DC also spoke on the occasion and said that the aim of the workshop is to create awareness among the general public regarding conservation, preservation, and judicious use of water. She said that these types of programmes will boost the tendency of people to save water.
She further added that the demand for water is increasing every year while resources are becoming more and more limited. That is why it is important to seek and start using all the innovative water conservation solutions and methods that are available today. She stressed the need to adopt Rainwater harvesting including Roof Top Rain Water Harvesting, percolation pits, check dams, diversion drains roadside drains to conserve rainwater for subsequent use in different activities.
Deputy Commissioner appealed to the masses through public representation to learn best practices available on the subject and replicate the same as per area-specific needs to conserve every drop of water. The awardees of ‘catch the rain’ contestants also participated in the workshop.
