“Deadly Negligence”: Rahul Gandhi Slams AINRC–BJP Govt Over Alleged Fake Drugs Scandal in Puducherry

Congress leader alleges counterfeit medicine network, institutional corruption, and economic decline in poll-bound Union Territory

New Delhi, Apr 07 : Intensifying his campaign ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections in Puducherry, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a sharp attack on the ruling AINRC–BJP government, accusing it of failing to curb a growing counterfeit medicines racket in the Union Territory.

Addressing a public rally, Gandhi alleged that Puducherry has become a major centre for the production and circulation of fake drugs, claiming that authorities have neglected strict enforcement. He warned that these spurious medicines are not limited to the region but are reaching other parts of the country, raising serious concerns over public health and safety.

Calling the situation alarming, Gandhi remarked that the matter transcends financial wrongdoing and directly threatens lives. He stated that the widespread distribution of such medicines endangers innocent citizens, making it a grave issue of accountability.

The Congress leader also levelled allegations of deep-rooted corruption in governance, claiming that a fixed percentage is being collected as commission in government contracts. According to him, such practices have become systemic, eroding transparency and public trust.

He further criticised the administration for inaction despite repeated warnings, suggesting that the lack of intervention has allowed irregularities to persist unchecked.

Turning to the economic landscape, Gandhi highlighted a downturn in Puducherry’s industrial and textile sectors. He claimed that several units have shut down due to policy gaps and weak governance, resulting in job losses and growing frustration among the youth.

Outlining his party’s vision, Gandhi said the Congress aims to restore clean governance, revive industrial growth, and rebuild investor confidence. He also promised to strengthen grassroots democracy by conducting long-pending civic body elections within six months, if voted to power, along with ensuring greater administrative accountability.
