Delhi Court Drops Case Against Shehla Rashid After LG Withdraws Prosecution Sanction

Delhi Court Closes Case Against Ex-JNU Leader Shehla Rashid Over Controversial Tweets

New Delhi, March, 01: A Delhi court has granted permission to the police to withdraw the case against former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) vice president Shehla Rashid Shora, who was facing charges over her tweets about the Indian Army. The case, which accused Rashid of promoting enmity between different groups and making statements prejudicial to harmony, was dropped following the withdrawal of prosecution sanction by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Anuj Kumar Singh passed the order on February 27 after the prosecution filed an application citing the LG’s decision. According to the application, Saxena approved the withdrawal of sanction based on the recommendation of a Screening Committee. The LG’s approval, granted on December 23, 2024, effectively nullified the legal grounds for proceeding with the case, leading the prosecution to seek its closure.

The case stemmed from a series of tweets posted by Rashid on August 18, 2019, in which she alleged that the Indian Army had entered homes in Kashmir and “tortured” locals. The Army had strongly refuted these allegations, dismissing them as baseless and misleading. The tweets had sparked a major controversy at the time, leading to legal action against Rashid under provisions related to promoting enmity and disrupting public harmony.
