FIR Registered Against Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda Over Alleged Hurt to Christian Sentiments in Film ‘Jaat’

Jalandhar, April 18: A formal First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Bollywood actors Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda, along with co-actor Vineet Kumar, film director Gopichand, and producer Naveen, in connection with allegations of hurting the religious sentiments of the Christian community through content depicted in the recently released film Jaat. The film, which hit cinemas on April 10, has come under scrutiny for reportedly portraying scenes that are being viewed as offensive to Christian beliefs and practices.

The complaint was filed by Viklav Gold, a representative of the Christian community in Punjab, who approached the Jalandhar police expressing strong objections to particular scenes in the film. Gold alleged that specific depictions in Jaat not only show Jesus Christ in a disrespectful manner but also misrepresent core elements of Christian rituals and religious symbols. He further questioned the timing of the film’s release, pointing out that it was launched just days before Good Friday — a period considered deeply sacred in Christianity — thus compounding the hurt caused to the community.

Responding to the complaint, the police at the Jalandhar Cantt police station registered the FIR on Wednesday evening. Sanjeev Kumar, the Station House Officer (SHO), confirmed the development and stated that the case has been filed under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.”

The legal action follows mounting pressure from community leaders and civil society members, who have demanded accountability from the film’s cast and crew. They argue that freedom of expression in art and cinema must not come at the cost of religious harmony and mutual respect. “Religious figures and sacred practices should be handled with sensitivity and reverence, especially in a pluralistic country like India where faith communities coexist,” said a local Christian leader supporting the complaint. Authorities have assured that a fair and impartial investigation will be conducted, respecting both artistic expression and communal sensitivity.
