Gavaskar Hails Team India’s Dominant Victory Over Afghanistan

Former skipper highlights selfless batting, Nitish Kumar Reddy’s versatility, and Gurnoor Brar’s impressive debut as India secures a commanding series lead in Dharamshala.

India, June 15 : India began the ODI series against Afghanistan on a winning note with a comprehensive seven-wicket victory in the rain-affected opening match in Dharamshala. The hosts chased down a challenging target in a shortened 25-overs-per-side contest to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, drawing praise from former captain Sunil Gavaskar for their disciplined and team-oriented approach.

Speaking after the match, Gavaskar commended the Indian batting unit for prioritizing the team’s objective over individual achievements. He pointed to the crucial phase of the chase when KL Rahul accelerated the scoring rate despite Shubman Gill being within touching distance of a century.

According to Gavaskar, Rahul’s aggressive intent reflected the current culture within the Indian setup, where collective success takes precedence over personal milestones. He noted that Afghanistan had set a demanding target and that India’s batters displayed remarkable composure and confidence to complete the chase with overs to spare.

The former captain observed that the match was far from straightforward, but India’s calculated approach made the pursuit appear much easier than it actually was. By finishing the game in the 23rd over, the batting side demonstrated its ability to absorb pressure and seize control at key moments.

Gavaskar particularly highlighted Rahul’s attacking over against pacer Zia Ur Rahman, which shifted momentum decisively in India’s favour. The burst of runs reduced the pressure on the chasing side and ensured there was no opportunity for Afghanistan to stage a comeback.

Beyond the batting display, Gavaskar also praised all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy for providing balance to the squad. He emphasized that Reddy’s ability to contribute effectively with both bat and ball gives the team management greater flexibility in selecting combinations based on pitch conditions and match requirements.

The youngster’s role as an additional bowling option strengthens India’s depth, allowing the captain more tactical choices during crucial phases of a game. Such versatility, Gavaskar noted, is invaluable in modern limited-overs cricket, where adaptable players often become match-winners.

Another player who earned special mention was debutant fast bowler Gurnoor Brar. Making his first appearance for India, Brar impressed with his pace, control, and ability to extract movement from the surface. Gavaskar was particularly encouraged by the young pacer’s composure and execution despite the pressure that comes with an international debut.

The former opener said Brar’s ability to consistently bowl at high speed while generating movement away from right-handed batters makes him an exciting prospect for the future. His disciplined spell provided India with early breakthroughs and showcased the depth of emerging talent within the country’s pace-bowling ranks.

India’s victory not only handed them an early advantage in the series but also underlined the strength of a squad that continues to blend experienced performers with promising newcomers. The performance highlighted several positives, including an efficient chase, valuable all-round contributions, and the successful integration of fresh talent into the national setup.

With momentum firmly on their side, India will head into the second ODI looking to seal the series. Afghanistan, meanwhile, will aim to regroup quickly and produce a stronger all-round display to keep the contest alive.

For India, the opening match served as an example of how teamwork, adaptability, and smart decision-making can turn a challenging target into a comfortable victory. Gavaskar’s assessment reflected that sentiment, emphasizing that the willingness of players to put the team’s interests above individual records remains one of the side’s greatest strengths.

As the series progresses, the performances of players such as Rahul, Gill, Reddy, and Brar are likely to remain under close scrutiny. If the opening encounter is any indication, India appears well-positioned to continue its positive run and build further confidence ahead of upcoming international assignments.
