Ghulam Nabi Azad Rejects Delhi-Style Statehood for J&K, Advocates for Traditional Governance
Azad Decries Proposed Centralized Statehood Model for Jammu and Kashmir, Pledges Parliamentary Advocacy
Srinagar, 03-04-2024 : Ghulam Nabi Azad, the leader of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, firmly asserted today that a Statehood arrangement akin to that of Delhi would not find favor with the people of J&K under any circumstances.
Speaking to reporters at the party headquarters, Azad emphasized that such a proposal would be untenable both for him personally and for the populace of J&K, who are deeply attached to the traditional Statehood structure that has endured for generations. He expressed concern over recent indications suggesting a Statehood model resembling that of Delhi, where key powers such as law and order would be centralized under the Centre, including the roles of Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister.
Azad vowed to leverage his influence in Parliament to advocate for the restoration of full Statehood for J&K, along with safeguards akin to those enshrined in Article 35-A, which he views as essential for the region’s welfare.
Reflecting on the revocation of Article 370 and Article 35-A, Azad likened it to a sudden lightning strike, stressing that the struggle over its implications is far from over. He cited promises made by the Government in Parliament regarding the restoration of Statehood, but recent developments have raised doubts about the sincerity of those assurances.
Regarding his decision to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, Azad cited multiple factors, including his leadership qualities and commitment to stand at the forefront of the party’s efforts. He emphasized his track record of independent action and advocacy for the people, irrespective of the political climate.
Azad also highlighted the urgent need to address J&K’s power crisis, particularly during the harsh winter months, advocating for the advancement of projects like the 2000 MW thermal projects in the region.
Furthermore, he underscored the imperative of addressing the plight of Kashmiri Pandits beyond mere rhetoric, urging for concrete action and parliamentary engagement to tackle the issue effectively.
Responding to criticism from opposition figures, particularly Omar Abdullah, regarding his electoral strategy in the Chenab Valley, Azad asserted his ability to contest and win elections anywhere, drawing upon his extensive political experience.
Regarding speculation about his involvement in a grand alliance, Azad clarified that he operates independently and remains committed to pursuing his own political agenda, regardless of external perceptions or pressures. He reaffirmed his dedication to his political journey and vowed to continue his advocacy for the people of J&K both within and outside Parliament.
