Google Unveils New Gemini Powered AI Features in Gmail

Gemini AI features like AI Inbox and Help Me Write aim to make Gmail smarter, more personalised, and productivity focused

San Francisco, Jan 09 — Google has introduced a suite of Gemini-powered AI experiences in Gmail, designed to provide users with more helpful and personalised insights, the company announced. The rollout has begun in the US for Gmail users, as well as Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

AI Inbox, the highlight of the new features, functions like a personalised briefing, helping users prioritise emails, highlighting to-dos, and surfacing important contacts. Google said the system identifies VIPs based on frequent interactions, contacts, and inferred relationships, all while maintaining user privacy and keeping data under the individual’s control.

Blake Barnes, Gmail VP Product, said, “We’re starting with English and excited to roll out more languages and to more regions in the coming months. Trusted testers are getting early access before broader availability.”

AI Overviews now allow Gmail to synthesise long email threads into concise summaries and generate quick answers to user queries using Gemini AI, similar to Google Search’s AI-powered information processing. This feature is being rolled out to all users at no cost.

The ‘Help Me Write’ tool, along with updated Suggested Replies, uses AI to draft or polish emails and generate context-aware, one-click responses. Proofread functionality is available for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, while Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are free for all Gmail users. Google plans to enhance Help Me Write next month with deeper personalisation using context from other Google apps.

With 3 billion active users, Gmail continues to integrate AI into its ecosystem, from Smart Replies to AI-powered spam protection, reflecting Google’s ongoing focus on productivity and intelligent email management.
