India Faces Crisis, But PM Modi Focuses on Self-Promotion: Congress Criticizes Podcast Remarks
Jairam Ramesh Targets Modi Over Lex Fridman Podcast, Questions Leadership Amid Challenges
New Delhi, 17-03-2025: The Congress on Monday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent podcast interaction with American podcaster Lex Fridman, calling for a shift from “self-glorification” to effective governance, especially at a time when India is grappling with significant economic and geopolitical challenges.
Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh took a jibe at the Prime Minister’s remarks, pointing out that Modi’s focus on personal narratives comes when the economy is under strain, regional tensions are escalating, and the global order is increasingly unstable. Ramesh stated that instead of prioritizing self-promotion, governance should take precedence.
During the three-hour conversation, Modi discussed various aspects of his life, foreign policy perspectives, and ideological influences. He praised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for instilling patriotic values in him, acknowledged Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring legacy, and presented himself as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
However, Congress leaders were quick to counter Modi’s claims. Ramesh accused the Prime Minister of hypocrisy, alleging that while Modi speaks about the importance of criticism in democracy, he has systematically undermined institutions meant to ensure government accountability and silenced dissenting voices. He further pointed out that Modi has avoided facing an open press conference but has chosen to engage with a foreign podcaster instead.
The Congress’ remarks reflect its continued criticism of the Modi government’s approach to governance, arguing that while the Prime Minister engages in image-building exercises, pressing national issues remain unaddressed.
