India Sets New LPG Production Targets as Middle East Tensions Disrupt Energy Supplies

The government has asked oil companies to raise domestic cooking gas output as India seeks to strengthen supplies amid uncertainty in global energy markets.

NEW DELHI, Aug 17: India has set new daily production targets for cooking gas as the government steps up efforts to safeguard domestic LPG supplies amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The government has fixed a maximum daily production target of 63,810 metric tonnes for LPG producers, including state-run and private-sector companies, according to a report published on Sunday.

The move comes against the backdrop of uncertainty in international energy markets, with tensions in the Middle East affecting oil prices and raising concerns over the movement of energy supplies through key shipping routes.

India, one of the world’s major energy importers, has been closely monitoring developments in the region because disruptions to crude oil and gas flows can affect domestic fuel availability and costs.

The higher production target is aimed at encouraging oil companies to maximise domestic output and strengthen the availability of cooking gas for consumers.

The government has also been focusing on maintaining adequate energy supplies as global markets remain volatile. Higher crude prices can increase India’s import bill and put additional pressure on the country’s external accounts.

The latest measure is particularly significant for the LPG sector, where stable supplies are essential for households as well as commercial users.

Energy companies are expected to adjust their production and distribution operations in line with the government’s requirements while authorities continue to monitor international developments.

The initiative forms part of India’s broader efforts to strengthen energy security and reduce vulnerability to external supply disruptions.
