India Sets Sights on More Semiconductor Plants Over Next Seven Years
Prime Minister Modi highlights semiconductor manufacturing as a key pillar of India's technology self reliance and future economic growth.
NEW DELHI, Aug 15: India is set to witness a significant expansion in semiconductor manufacturing over the next seven to eight years, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighting the sector as a major component of the country’s technology and economic strategy.
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the 80th Independence Day, Modi said India has taken important steps towards becoming self reliant in semiconductor production and is preparing for further expansion of the industry.
The government’s push comes as semiconductors have become increasingly important to sectors ranging from smartphones and automobiles to artificial intelligence, telecommunications and advanced defence systems.
India has been seeking to build a domestic semiconductor ecosystem covering chip fabrication, packaging, design and related manufacturing capabilities. The expansion is expected to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce dependence on overseas sources for critical electronic components.
The semiconductor drive also forms part of India’s broader effort to move from being primarily a technology consumer to becoming a producer and exporter of advanced technologies.
With demand for chips expected to rise alongside AI, connected devices and digital infrastructure, greater domestic manufacturing capacity could help India attract investment, create skilled employment and strengthen its position in the global technology supply chain.
The government’s emphasis on semiconductors is therefore being viewed as a long-term technology strategy aimed at combining manufacturing growth with greater strategic self-reliance.
