India-UK Join Hands to Use AI Against Digital Fraud

New telecom partnership will explore artificial intelligence-based approaches to tackle online scams, fraud and digital harms.

New Delhi, Sept. 15: India and the United Kingdom have stepped up cooperation in the fight against online fraud and scams through a new partnership focused on the use of artificial intelligence in telecommunications.

The UK government and the Cellular Operators Association of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding on September 14 to promote cooperation on AI-enabled approaches to identifying and countering digital fraud, scams and related online harms. The development was announced by the British High Commission in New Delhi on September 15.

The agreement comes as telecommunications networks and digital platforms face increasingly sophisticated fraud attempts. Artificial intelligence is emerging as an important tool for detecting suspicious activity, identifying unusual patterns and strengthening safeguards for users.

The partnership is expected to encourage the exchange of knowledge and expertise between the two countries, while supporting the development of technology-driven approaches to improve digital safety.

For India, the cooperation comes amid rapid expansion in digital services, online payments and smartphone-based communication. The growth of these services has also increased the need for stronger mechanisms to protect consumers from fraudulent messages, calls and other forms of online deception.

The UK and India are seeking to strengthen their wider technology relationship, with artificial intelligence playing an increasingly important role in digital governance, cybersecurity and telecommunications.

The new cooperation could also provide opportunities for industry stakeholders to examine how AI can be integrated into telecom networks without compromising user protection or trust.

As digital fraud becomes more sophisticated, collaboration between governments, telecom operators and technology companies is increasingly being viewed as essential to developing faster and more effective responses.
