Indian-American Amish Shah Secures Democratic Congressional Primary Victory in Arizona

WASHINGTON, July 23: Indian-American politician and emergency medicine doctor Amish Shah has secured a major victory in Arizona after winning the Democratic primary for the state’s First Congressional District. Shah defeated establishment backed candidate Marlene Galan Woods in a closely contested race, strengthening his bid to enter the US House of Representatives.

Shah, a moderate Democrat and former three-term member of the Arizona House of Representatives, built his campaign around direct voter outreach. His grassroots strategy included visiting nearly 28,000 homes as he sought support from residents across the district.

Following his primary victory, Shah will now face Republican candidate Jay Feely, a former NFL kicker who has received backing from US President Donald Trump, in the November general election.

Grassroots Campaign Helps Shah Overcome Establishment Challenge

Shah’s victory marked another setback for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), which had supported Marlene Galan Woods. She became the third DCCC backed candidate to lose a competitive House primary this year, following defeats of Jasmeet Bains in California and Joe Baldacci in Maine.

Celebrating his win, Shah described the result as a victory for ordinary voters and grassroots participation.

“Our victory in this primary was a grassroots victory where Arizona voters made their voices heard. Now, it is my responsibility to earn the support of every voter in this district  including Democrats who supported another candidate, Independents frustrated with the political system, and Republicans disappointed with the current direction of the country,” Shah said.

Doctor With Political Experience Eyes Congressional Seat

Before entering politics, Amish Shah established himself as a medical professional. He worked as an emergency medicine physician and previously served as the team doctor providing emergency care for the New York Jets. Interestingly, his upcoming Republican opponent Jay Feely was the team’s kicker during the same period.

Shah has already contested the congressional race once before. In 2024, he won the Democratic primary for the same district but narrowly lost the general election to Republican David Schweikert by four percentage points.

The political landscape changed this year after Schweikert, an eight-term congressman, left the congressional race to pursue the Republican nomination for Arizona governor. He was defeated in the primary by Andy Biggs, a candidate supported by Trump.

Indian Roots and Academic Background

Born in Chicago to Gujarati parents who migrated to the United States during the 1960s, Shah has maintained strong connections with his Indian heritage. His father follows Jain traditions, while his mother is Hindu.

He completed his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University and later earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School through its Honours Program in Medical Education.

Shah also received a full merit scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley. He completed his emergency medicine residency at a Level-1 trauma centre in New York City, gaining experience in critical care and emergency healthcare.

Focus on Public Health and Community Service

Beyond medicine and politics, Shah has worked on several community initiatives. He founded the first Arizona Vegetarian Food Festival as a philanthropic effort aimed at encouraging healthier lifestyles and reducing preventable diseases.

He has also supported organisations focused on arts education for children, animal welfare, and community development. His charitable work includes contributions to Sounds Academy and the Humane Society of the United States.

According to his campaign profile, Shah enjoys basketball, flying small aircraft and travelling. He is fluent in Gujarati and speaks conversational Spanish.

A Competitive Battle Ahead in November

With the Democratic nomination secured, Shah now faces a challenging general election campaign against Jay Feely, who enters the race with Republican support and backing from President Donald Trump.

The Arizona First District contest is expected to attract national attention as both candidates represent contrasting political visions. For Shah, the November election represents another opportunity to turn his grassroots support into a seat in the US Congress.
