Indian Markets Begin Week on Cautious Note as Oil Prices Weigh on Sentiment

Sensex and Nifty remain subdued as investors balance strong earnings against geopolitical risks

NEW DELHI: Indian equity markets opened on a cautious note on Monday as investors weighed encouraging corporate earnings against concerns over elevated crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty.

The Sensex and Nifty remained largely steady in early trade, with strong quarterly results providing some support while higher oil prices continued to create pressure. The market had ended the previous week with gains, with the Sensex rising 0.52 per cent and the Nifty advancing 0.77 per cent.

Investors are closely tracking developments in global markets as uncertainty surrounding the Middle East continues to influence energy prices and risk appetite.

The earnings season has emerged as an important support for domestic equities. Better than expected results from several companies have helped offset concerns related to higher input costs and international volatility.

Analysts are also monitoring movements in the rupee, crude oil prices and foreign institutional investment flows for further direction.

Market participants expect stock specific activity to remain high as more companies release financial results and provide guidance on their business outlook.

The performance of sectors sensitive to crude prices, including aviation, paints, chemicals and transportation, is likely to remain under close observation, while energy companies could respond differently to changes in global oil markets.

With global inflation, interest-rate expectations and geopolitical developments continuing to shape investor sentiment, domestic equities could see volatility through the week.
