IT Industry a Major Pillar of India’s Economy: Vaishnaw

Union Minister announces AI and electronics skilling initiatives, Jaipur data centre, and Rajasthan’s AI & Machine Learning Policy to boost innovation driven growth

New Delhi / Jaipur, Jan 7: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday underlined that India’s IT industry is a major pillar of the national economy, emphasizing that states like Rajasthan are playing a key role in fostering innovation driven growth.

Addressing the Rajasthan Regional AI Impact Conference virtually at the conclusion of the Rajasthan DigiFest TiE Global Summit, Vaishnaw highlighted a programme to train 10 lakh youth in artificial intelligence skills, benefiting young people across the country. The minister also announced plans to train 5,000 youth in electronics manufacturing in collaboration with industry bodies, and revealed that a data centre will soon be established in Jaipur.

“Artificial intelligence is developing rapidly worldwide. It is a proud moment for India that the Stanford AI Index has ranked the country among the top three globally,” Vaishnaw said, adding that the ranking reflects India’s growing strength in technology and innovation.

Vaishnaw also noted infrastructure developments in Rajasthan, including new railway connectivity in border areas, such as the Bikaner-Jaisalmer-Bhildi rail line.

Rajasthan’s push for AI-led growth

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said AI represents the next phase of India’s digital journey, and the state’s AI and Machine Learning Policy will accelerate public service delivery, improve transparency, and make governance more citizen-centric. Sharma emphasized Rajasthan’s efforts to become a technology and innovation hub through skilling, investment, and startup promotion.

“Artificial intelligence is writing a new language for humanity in this century,” Sharma said. He added that the government plans to establish an AI Centre of Excellence, integrate AI education in schools, colleges, ITIs, and polytechnics, and develop advanced skilling centres to prepare youth for technology driven opportunities.

The initiatives aim to position Rajasthan as a leader in AI adoption, moving beyond e-governance and digital inclusion toward innovation-led growth.
