J&K will emerge stronger; we’ll overcome every challenge, asserts Farooq Abdullah at SKICC event
Farooq Abdullah vows women’s empowerment, promises dedicated women’s centre in J&K
Srinagar, Apr 9: In a firm and optimistic statement, National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday reassured the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the government is steadfast in its commitment to steering the Union Territory out of its current challenges and hardships. He asserted that while criticism from adversaries is inevitable, it will not deter the government’s focus and resolve.
“There will always be enemies, and they will continue to criticise. But we are determined to fulfill our responsibilities and work tirelessly to pull this region out of its difficulties,” Dr. Abdullah said while speaking to reporters. His remarks came in response to questions regarding the recent uproar in the legislative assembly and opposition accusations that the ruling party failed to table a resolution rejecting the Waqf Amendment Act.
Dr. Abdullah was addressing media persons on the sidelines of a women’s conclave held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), where he was the chief guest. Speaking passionately on the need for gender equality, the senior leader underlined that no nation can attain true strength or progress unless its women are empowered and given equal rights.
“Women constitute 50 per cent of our population. It is high time we recognize their contribution and provide them the rights they are entitled to. The Women’s Reservation Bill passed by the Parliament must be implemented without further delay,” he urged.
Highlighting his party’s focus on women empowerment, Dr. Abdullah reiterated his earlier promise of establishing a dedicated Women’s Centre in Jammu and Kashmir, calling it a symbolic yet significant step towards uplifting women in the region. “As Jammu and Kashmir is the crown of India, we will begin this initiative from the crown itself. I have already directed that land be identified for this centre, and we will extend all possible support to make it a reality,” he announced.
Addressing the issue of pending court cases related to crimes against women, including domestic violence, the former Chief Minister stressed the importance of women’s political representation. “If our daughters become MLAs, DDC members, or panchayat leaders, they can raise their voices for justice. Their presence in these institutions will ensure that women’s issues are taken seriously,” he said.
Dr. Abdullah added that he personally would make efforts to ensure faster resolution of such cases, recognizing the psychological and social toll they take on women. He emphasized that empowering women politically and socially is essential for the holistic development of Jammu and Kashmir.
